SET Academy Core

Community Colleges

SET Academy Core equips community colleges with a turnkey, five-course Model-Based Systems Engineering curriculum. Developed by the Institute for Digital Enterprise Advancement with industry and academic partners, it takes students from systems thinking fundamentals through hands-on MBSE modeling and a full capstone project — preparing them for internships and entry-level digital engineering roles.

CURRICULUM // COURSE SEQUENCE
S1

Introduction to Systems Engineering

Systems thinking, lifecycle fundamentals, and the role of the systems engineer.

M1

Systems Modeling I

Foundations of model-based practice and the SysML language — structure, requirements, and basic behavior.

M2

Systems Modeling II

Intermediate modeling — architecture, behavior, and connecting requirements to design in the model.

M3

Systems Modeling III

Advanced modeling — analysis, simulation, trade studies, and verification through the model.

CAP1

Capstone Project

A full end-to-end MBSE project modeled on real industry problems.

CURRICULUM // ROADMAP

SET Academy Curriculum Roadmap

SET Academy develops systems modeling capability progressively across five courses. Students begin by learning how to think about and describe systems, progress into building and analyzing system models, and conclude by applying those skills to a customer-oriented capstone project.

S1

Introduction to Systems Engineering

Understand the System

Students establish the foundations needed to work with complex systems.

  • Systems and system decomposition
  • Systems thinking
  • System definitions, states, interfaces, and related systems
  • Engineering and systems engineering
  • Requirements development and management
  • Verification and validation
  • System design and analysis
  • Product lifecycles and technical reviews
  • Risk management
  • Introduction to system modeling and MBSE

Student emphasis: Understand, define, decompose, analyze, and communicate systems.

M1

Systems Modeling I

Build the Model

Students move from systems concepts into hands-on model development using SysML and MBSE tools.

  • Certification preparation

Student emphasis: Plan and manage modeling work while using the model as an engineering information resource.

CAP1

Systems Engineering Technology Capstone

Deliver the Model

Students apply the skills developed throughout SET Academy to a team-based, customer-oriented modeling project.

  • Assess a project and engineering data package
  • Establish system boundaries and project understanding
  • Develop questions for the customer
  • Participate in customer discussions
  • Create a modeling and work plan
  • Determine model structure and required diagrams
  • Develop and refine the system model
